DocWorking: The Whole Physician Podcast. Doctors devote their lives to caring for others, but the time has come to prioritize the health and wellness of physicians. As physicians, we make decisions every day about how to prioritize our time, energy, focus, attention, and money. Our lives are in our own hands. But are we making these as conscious choices or are we satisfied with speeding through life in default mode? Hosts Jen Barna MD, Coach Gabriella Dennery MD and Master Certified Coach Jill Farmer interview physicians to explore ways to embrace life AND a medical career, some who’ve chosen a path less traveled and others who have optimized their lives on a traditional medical career path. As coaches from the DocWorking team, Gabriella and Jill discuss actionable tips from their experience coaching physicians. We also invite guests on business, leadership, building financial independence, and other pertinent topics to physicians. If you’re a physician, we want to hear your story! Please email Jen Barna at podcast@docworking.com to be considered. Want to learn more? https://www.DocWorking.com

Our producer, Amanda Taran, is away this week and we've chosen to share some of our favorite episodes that you may not have heard.
“There’s something about that world of graphic medicine where you put it out onto paper, and you still sit with those feelings, but when you close the book or when you have something tangible and you can walk away from it, it does let you digest it in a way that talking about it or ignoring it or sublimating it in some way won’t.” -Mike Natter MD
This beautifully honest conversation between Lead Coach Jill Farmer and physician-artist Dr. Mike Natter delves into how intertwining art and medicine has led to vulnerability, and the unexpected positive results. Dr. Natter is in his second year of fellowship in endocrinology and is also a well recognized very talented artist. Jill talks to Dr. Natter about his art and how it impacts his life and practice of medicine. He used his art in medical school as a learning tool and continues to use his art as a way to learn and help others to learn. He also uses his art as an outlet that is relatable to so many other physicians. Tune in to get inspired to tap into your own talents outside of work.
Michael Natter is an artist, humanist, and doctor. He utilizes his passion for art and storytelling in his medical life in didactic, humorous, and cathartic ways. Diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in childhood, he became interested in medicine at a young age. Originally from New York City, he ventured to Philadelphia to attend Sidney Kimmel Medical College, completed his Internal Medicine Residency at NYU/Bellevue and is a current Endocrinology fellow at NYU/Bellevue. His work has been featured in media outlets such as The Philadelphia Inquirer, Annals of Internal Medicine, Buzzfeed, and others. You can follow his journey on Instagram @mike.natter, on twitter @mike_natter and via his website www.mikenattermedical.com where there are links to purchase prints of his art and versions of his art in enamel pin form for sale.

98: Physician Leadership Tools for 2021 and Beyond with Dr. Kemi Olugemo
Monday Sep 27, 2021
Monday Sep 27, 2021
“Networks are so important in every industry. I mean networks are hugely critical because they essentially start with relationships which I believe are the building blocks of the foundation to what you need to be impactful in society.”- Kemi Olugemo, MD, FAAN
In today’s episode, Coach Gabriella Dennery MD talks with Dr. Kemi Olugemo, a Neuroscience Physician Researcher and Healthcare Advocate, about her path in medicine and her take on leadership in 2021. We hear about two of the organizations she is very involved in, the important missions of those organizations, and the work they are doing. She speaks about situational adaptability, courage, networking and managing conflict. Dr. Olugemo also highlights the importance of mentors and sponsors on career advancements and the role it has played in her life. Tune in to hear more with Dr. Kemi Olugemo.
After earning her undergraduate degree in Clinical Laboratory Science from the University of Massachusetts (Magna cum Laude), Kemi completed her MD at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and remained in Baltimore for her Neurology Residency before undertaking an additional Fellowship in Neuroimmunology & Multiple Sclerosis (MS) at the Maryland Center for MS, also in Baltimore. As a staff Neurologist and partner in the Charles County Neurology Practice, Kemi introduced a number of novel infusion therapies for the practice’s patients which in turn brought her in contact with clinical research organizations, ultimately causing her to join the industry.
Kemi draws on a diverse set of experiences including being the current Director of Communications at Women of Color in Pharma (WOCIP), Board Member at Watermark (an organization with a mission to empower women to make their mark in their companies, careers and communities) and serving on the Scientific Committee of the International Society for CNS Clinical Trials and Methodology (ISCTM).
She is currently Executive Director, Clinical Development at Ionis Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

97: Physicians and Podcasting with Dr. Bradley Block
Friday Sep 24, 2021
Friday Sep 24, 2021
“...and physicians, we’re not good at doing this for ourselves, you have to give yourself some grace. Right? Like, ‘You’re being hard on yourself. You’re a good person, you’re working hard, you deserve the best.’” -Dr. Bradley Block
In today’s episode, Jen has a conversation with the host of the Physician’s Guide to Doctoring Podcast, Dr. Bradley Block, to talk about the ins and outs of physician podcasting. Have you ever thought about starting your own podcast or just wondered about the inner workings? In this episode, Jen asks Brad about his start at podcasting, what motivated him to do that, and the guest who most inspired him. They discuss whether podcasting is a viable side gig. If you’re a healthcare provider thinking about joining the podcast world, this is the episode for you!
Bradley Block, MD, is an otolaryngologist – head and neck surgeon on Long Island, New York, where he lives with his wife and three young sons. He is a partner at ENT and Allergy Associates and he created the Physician’s Guide to Doctoring Podcast. It is a scintillating and engaging podcast, where he interviews physician and non-physician experts to help teach us what we should have been learning while we were busy memorizing the Kreb’s Cycle. It is a practical guide for practicing physicians, physicians-in-training and all allied health professionals. Topics range from personal finance to politics to improving interactions with patients to what every doctor should know about different specialties. You can find him at PhysiciansGuidetoDoctoring.com and on Twitter and rarely on Instagram @physiciansguide. You can’t find him on TikTok, Snapchat, Etsy or on Pinterest and you probably never will.
Dr. Block attended medical school at SUNY Buffalo, graduating with research honors, and went on to ENT residency at Georgetown University Medical Center. He enjoys surfing (yes, there is surfing on Long Island), skiing (there is no skiing on Long Island), smoking meat, exercising, throwing his sons across the pool and finding any excuse to quote an 80s movie.

96: How Clarifying Your Top Values Leads to Better Decision Making
Wednesday Sep 22, 2021
Wednesday Sep 22, 2021
“We walk with our values everyday, but oftentimes we don’t realize what they are. So name them, put them on a sheet of paper, stick them in a journal, put them where you can see them, remind yourself. And when you’re making that tough decision, when you have to let’s say move across the country, when kids are starting back in school finally and all the sudden there’s a new opportunity that comes, what do you do? What do you decide? Your values will be a major aspect of that decision.” - Coach Gabriella Dennery MD
In today’s episode, Coaches Gabriella and Jill walk us through how to make decisions based on our values and they explain how important that is in helping us thrive. Have you gone through the exercise of identifying and naming your personal values? Can you narrow them down to the three to five that are the most important to you? That is one of the tips the Coaches recommend to do first. Getting clear on your personal values will help you walk with them daily and make your decisions based on those values instead of outside influences such as people pleasing. Who hasn’t been there? Please join us to learn more about clarifying your values and making decisions based on those.

“We think better about complex abstract ideas when we can engage with them in a physical way or see a graph or picture of them, rather than just hearing about them.” -Rebecca Schwarzlose PhD
In today’s episode, Jill has a fascinating conversation with Dr. Rebecca Schwarzlose about the amazing and complex maps in our brains. Dr. Rebecca Schwarzlose is a postdoctoral scholar and cognitive neuroscientist in the Psychiatry Department at Washington University in St. Louis. She received her Ph.D. in Neuroscience at M.I.T. and has served as the chief editor of Trends in Cognitive Sciences, a cognitive and neuroscience journal. At Washington University, Dr. Schwarzlose studies neurocognitive development in children with neurodevelopmental disorders as well as typically developing children. She is the author of the new book, Brainscapes: The Warped, Wondrous Maps Written in Your Brain – and How They Guide You. The book was recently praised in the New York Times as “enlightening and ambitious . . . a book that travels into rich terrain, charted by a smart and eager tour guide.” It was supported by a grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Program for Public Understanding of Science and Technology. You can find more information about Dr. Schwarzlose and her work on her website (www.rebeccaschwarzlose.com) and blog (www.gardenofthemind.com), as well as on Twitter (@gothemind)

Take Back Your Time: Get a Virtual Assistant
Working in the medical field is fulfilling but it can also be exhausting. Physicians often sacrifice their personal time to carry out their duties. They want to go on vacations, start passion projects, or start side businesses but finding the time seems impossible. Recently, more and more physicians are giving outsourcing a try. Outsourcing allows you to delegate tasks to virtual assistants so you can free up your time and finally do whatever it is you’ve been wanting to do.
