DocWorking: The Whole Physician Podcast. Doctors devote their lives to caring for others, but the time has come to prioritize the health and wellness of physicians. As physicians, we make decisions every day about how to prioritize our time, energy, focus, attention, and money. Our lives are in our own hands. But are we making these as conscious choices or are we satisfied with speeding through life in default mode? Hosts Jen Barna MD, Coach Gabriella Dennery MD and Master Certified Coach Jill Farmer interview physicians to explore ways to embrace life AND a medical career, some who’ve chosen a path less traveled and others who have optimized their lives on a traditional medical career path. As coaches from the DocWorking team, Gabriella and Jill discuss actionable tips from their experience coaching physicians. We also invite guests on business, leadership, building financial independence, and other pertinent topics to physicians. If you’re a physician, we want to hear your story! Please email Jen Barna at podcast@docworking.com to be considered. Want to learn more? https://www.DocWorking.com

“The hope and faith in the medical system. Hope in my relationship with him. Knowing that I’m not going through this alone.”
-Vanessa Naum
We’re excited to welcome back Physician Marriage Coaches, Dr. George (Dr. Jeep) and Vanessa Naum.
In this episode, Vanessa discusses her experience dealing with Fibromyalgia and how being married to a physician has impacted her journey living with a chronic illness. Dr. Jeep and Vanessa give advice on how to best help a partner or loved one dealing with a chronic illness and the importance of understanding and compassion. You don’t want to miss this inspiring episode!
According to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published in 2018, approximately 60% of adults in the United States have at least one chronic condition, such as heart disease, diabetes, or cancer.
Furthermore, a survey conducted by the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP Public Policy Institute found that about one in three adults in the United States, or 34.2 million people, have provided unpaid care to an adult aged 50 or older in the past 12 months. Of these caregivers, 60% reported providing care for someone with a chronic illness.
It's worth noting that these statistics are from studies conducted before the COVID-19 pandemic, which may have had an impact on the prevalence of chronic illnesses and caregiving in the United States.
According to a study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in 2020, 16.5% of physicians in the United States reported having a chronic illness and 14.2% reported providing care for an adult family member with a chronic illness.
The study also found that female physicians were more likely than male physicians to have a chronic illness or care for someone with a chronic illness. Additionally, physicians who reported having a chronic illness were more likely to work part-time or reduce their clinical workload than those without a chronic illness.
It's worth noting that the characteristics and experiences of physicians with chronic illnesses may vary based on the type of illness, severity of symptoms, and other factors.

219: Physicians, Nonclinical Careers and Choices in Healthcare with Dr. Tom Davis
Thursday Mar 30, 2023
Thursday Mar 30, 2023
“It’s all about choices in your life. There are so many options out there. And when you have the industry mandated blinders on, on the treadmill, never being told you’re good enough, it’s easy to get the feeling that ‘This is all there is to life.’ There is an entire world out there! And the health of the system is not on your shoulders.”
-Tom Davis, MD
In today’s episode, we are excited to welcome Dr. Tom Davis back (click here for our previous episode with Dr. Davis). Dr. Davis is an entrepreneur, telemedicine expert, mentor, speaker, and author. He consistently releases great high-value content across his many channels so clinicians can serve their patients sustainably and with joy, while prioritizing their own well-being.
In this episode, Dr. Davis speaks with host, Dr. Jen Barna, about the company he created with cofounder Dr. John Jurica, called NewScript.
“NewScript is a community of healthcare professionals, career transition mentors and wellness specialists helping each other to live a better life.”
Dr. Davis talks about the inspiration behind starting NewScript and how it helps healthcare professionals feel less alone and gives them the opportunity to share their journeys in a confidential, safe space.
Dr. Davis also shares his experience on TikTok and how he’s found success creating short, informational videos.
Dr. Davis and Dr. Barna also discuss the NewScript Annual Summit coming up on the topic of NonClinical Careers.
“This summit is designed to:
- Introduce you to fulfilling nonclinical careers and side jobs
- Inspire you to overcome limited beliefs and take bold action
- Teach you how to pursue the most popular nontraditional jobs”
Click this link to sign up for the NewScript Summit today! The live event starts April 11, 2023.
After hanging his shingle in a small town on the Missouri River in 1994, Dr. Tom Davis and his partners leveraged one of the first total-risk Medicare Advantage contracts into the creation of a regional health system. After 18 years of wonderfully autonomous practice, Dr. Davis sold his health system to a regional competitor for $132m and began traveling the country with one goal, using the lessons learned to mentor other clinicians and their organizations in how to quit the treadmill and practice with joy. Telemedicine, cash-pay clinical revenue streams, value-based healthcare, expert witness, course work, consulting, speaking, writing; Dr. Davis’ unique, practical perspective has helped thousands of clinicians lead more fulfilled lives. He currently shares his wisdom in his online community app NewScript, available on Apple and Google play.

216: Finances, Physicians and Burnout with Daniel Wrenne
Thursday Jan 19, 2023
Thursday Jan 19, 2023
“I guess the average person doesn't have a plan. So that's a good first start, like have a plan. Everybody should have a plan. That's good. But like a lot of people that do planning, they skip the most important part. What is your purpose in life? Why are you here? What's most important to you? What are your values like? Where do you want to go? What does your ideal future look like? I think it's hard to do that exercise in training because you're like, super, go, go, go.”
- Daniel Wrenne
Daniel Wrenne loves helping people use their finances to live better lives. During the work day, he is busy running Wrenne Financial Planning, a planning firm dedicated to helping physicians use money to live better lives and hosting the Finance for Physicians Podcast. Ultimately, he wants to live a life worth imitating and help others do the same. Above all, he values his faith in Christ and his family. Most of his spare time involves wrestling his boys Noah, Henry and Andrew, coaching soccer, and spending time with his wife Alison.
Many people, especially physicians, can be intimidated to come forward with their problems around burnout and money. Burnout can be a hidden problem, even from ourselves. We are so accustomed to not being able to make ourselves vulnerable in our culture that we tend to deny it and tend to look for ways to solve it on our own. Often as physicians, we feel that we should be able to heal ourselves. We look for solutions without telling other people, which leads to higher suicide rate and contributes to the epidemic of burnout that we're facing right now.
One thing that we see over and over again in our physician community at DocWorking is people who feel there's a big connection between being trapped by our finances and feeling burned out. The concept of having options of financial independence is so important, and Daniel explains how planning ahead and having your financial ducks in a row makes all the difference. Our mindset around money can greatly impact our financial path and keeping your values in mind when setting goals helps you stay on track. Daniel talks about how to sail your financial ship with direction, finding the right motivation for change, and how working with a coach, therapist, or financial planner is important for finding financial success and sustainability.
What’s Inside:
- The link between burnout and finances and the impact of lifestyle creep
- The importance of a healthy money mindset and knowing your personal values
- How working with a coach, therapist, or financial planner can help you achieve your goals

“Maybe getting a little clear on what this idea is so you can be even 5% or 10% more intentional about keeping those two things separate.”
- Jill Farmer
Contaminated time is a topic that comes up a lot in our conversations. It’s a term that’s been recently introduced in the field of stress management. Here, we discuss what contaminated time actually is and what someone can do about it. We first learned about the term from New York Times best-selling author and Pulitzer Prize winner, Brigid Schulte. Essentially, contaminated time refers to the idea that, whether we’re at work or at home, our time can become “contaminated” by worries, thoughts, energy, and attention, which takes us away from the present moment.
Research has shown that those with less contaminated time are more productive. We discuss practical ways to better manage contaminated time that won’t make you feel robotic. Much of dealing with contaminated time involves setting boundaries around things like checking and responding to emails. Here, we share some of the ways we can tackle time leaking so you can spend more time being present in both your professional and personal lives.
What’s Inside:
- The definition of contaminated time and its impact.
- How to effectively deal with time leaks and stay in the present moment.
- Practical tips to implement boundaries to prevent time contamination.
